87 Academy Awards Winners : Oscar Awards

The 87th Academy Awards ceremony, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) was held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles.

The Academy Awards (commonly referred as Oscars) were presented in twenty four categories. They are
  • Best Picture -  Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance).
  • Best Actor -  Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything).
  • Best Actress - Julianne Moore (Still Alice).
  • Best Supporting Actor - J. K. Simmons (Whiplash).
  • Best Supporting Actress - Patricia Arquette (Boyhood).
  • Best Director - Alejandro G. Iñárritu for Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance).
  • Best Original Screenplay - Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance).
  • Best Adapted Screenplay - The Imitation Game.
  • Best Original Song - Glory (Selma).
  • Best Original Score - The Grand Budapest Hotel.
  • Best Production Design - The Grand Budapest Hotel.
  • Best Editing - Whiplash.
  • Best Cinematography - Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance).
  • Best Sound Editing - American Sniper.
  • Best Sound Mixing - Whiplash.
  • Best Foreign Language Film - Ida (Poland).
  • Best Documentary Feature - CitizenFour.
  • Best Documentary Short Subject - Crisis Hotline: Veterans Press 1.
  • Best Live Action Short Film - The Phone Call.
  • Best Visual Effects - Interstellar.
  • Best Animated Feature Film - Big Hero 6.
  • Best Animated Short Film - Feast.
  • Best Makeup and Hairstyling - The Grand Budapest Hotel.
  • Best Costume Design - The Grand Budapest Hotel.

Most awards: Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) and The Grand Budapest Hotel (Both received 4 awards).

Economist Amartya Sen awarded inaugural John Maynard Keynes Prize 2015

Eminent Indian economist and Nobel laureate Amartya Senhas been awarded the inaugural Charleston-EFG John Maynard Keynes Prize 2015.
He was chosen for this award for his ground-breaking work that has profound impact on the formation of development policy worldwide and outstanding contribution to society.

Amartya Sen will receive £7,500 to commission a work of art. He will also give the annual Charleston-EFG Keynes Lecture on the topic The Economic Consequences of Austerity at the Charleston Festival on 23 May 2015.

About Amartya Sen

  1. Amartya Sen was born on 3 November 1933 in Manikganj district in British India (Now in Bangladesh).
  2. He is regarded as one of the foremost thinkers in the field of famine, poverty, social choice and welfare economics.
  3. He was teacher and a research scholar in the Department of Economics, Jadavpur University, West Bengal.. Currently, he is a Professor of Economics and Philosophy at Harvard University.
  4. His has authored more than 100 books which have been translated into more than 30 languages.

Awards: 
  • He has won many prestigious awards. Few of them are
  • Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 1998 for his work in welfare economics.
  • Bharat Ratna- India’s highest Civilian Award in 1999.
  • National Humanities Medal in 2012.
About Charleston-EFG John Maynard Keynes Prize

It is an international award, instituted in the memory and spirit of British Economist John Maynard Keynes’ work, life and legacy.

The aim of this prize is to honour individuals from around the world who continue to embody Keynes’ extraordinary attributes.

Pranab Mukherjee Announced Padma Awards 2015

President Pranab Mukherjee has announced the names of Recipients of this year’s Padma awards. He approved conferment of 104 Padma Awards.
  • Padma Awards, the country’s highest civilian awards, are conferred in three Categories viz. Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri.
  • This years list comprises 9 Padma Vibhushan, 20 Padma Bhushan and 75 Padma Shri Awardees. Among these awardees 17 are women and equal number are in category of foreigners, NRIs, PIOs. While, 4 are posthumous awardees.

The Awards are given in various disciplines- art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, civil service, etc.

2015 Padma Vibhushan Awards

It is the second highest civilian award. It is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service.

All you need to know about the Bharat Ratna

Bharat Ratna, the country’s highest civilian award instituted in 1954, is given in recognition of exceptional service, performance of the highest order in any field of human endeavour. Any person without distinction of race, occupation, position or sex is eligible for this award.

The recommendations for Bharat Ratna are made by the Prime Minister to the President. The number of annual awards is restricted to a maximum of three in a particular year.

On conferment of the award, the recipient receives a Sanad (certificate) signed by the President and a medallion. The award does not carry any monetary grant. The award cannot be used as a prefix or suffix to the recipient’s name.
